I just received a link to this video and I feel I'm obligated to share it.
Back in 1992 a half empty room in a UN convention in Rio de Janeiro gave a big applause to this kid who gave an amazing speech about the problems that we face in today's world. She challenged the grown ups to stop damaging what they can not fix or else they would be jeopardizing 5 billion people, 30 million species.
Did they listen to her? Was she able to change their minds? The reality shows that we keep destroying our only world. We keep poisoning our water, cutting down trees, polluting the air. The rich is richer and the poor has become poorer. Africa, South and Central America and Asia deal with starvation and huge corruption. Countries keep making up excuses to start wars.
We face global warming and severe natural disasters all over the planet.
I do think that not everything is lost and the fact that this record of that speech exists and it's out there means that we still got a chance to change the course of our destiny and every living creature in this planet. It's in our hands and only we can make it happen.
It won't happen from one day to the other. Not even in 10 or 15 years. This is a long process and it will takes a lot of perseverance if we want to win this one. If you are reading this, know that you can make a change. You don't need to be part of a non-government organization to make a significant change. Just by using carefully the energy, water and gas; by recycling garbage and used batteries YOU can make a change. And if YOU can influence your family, friends and co-workers to do the same, it will start a huge chain that won't be broken if we are really determined to save our planet.
Think before you drop a piece of paper to the floor, before you drop your cigarette or a plastic bag to the floor. Use what you need and don't abuse, and you'll see that we will succeed.
I recommend you all watch Al Gore's documentary film about global warming called An Inconvenient Truth.
Remember it's still not too late to save our planet.
